Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why was a modern roundabout considered? A. Over the past few years, the popularity of modern roundabouts has grown considerably. In fact, the City of Lincoln currently has 25 roundabouts constructed throughout the city, with several others in the design or planning stages. Public opinion of the roundabouts already constructed around the city has been extremely positive. In 2009, the City of Lincoln decided to conduct a roundabout study for the intersection of 14th and Superior. The results of the study concluded that a modern roundabout would function better than a signalized intersection and cost less to construct.
Q. Will North 14th Street still be widened to four lanes? A. Yes. Whether the 14th and Superior intersection remains signalized or a roundabout is constructed, North 14th Street from Superior Street to Alvo Road will be widened to four lanes. However, there are no current plans to widen 14th Street to the south of Superior Street.
Q. How much will this project cost? How is it being funded? A. The whole project has been estimated at $11 million. This project will be funded with local funds generated by the City Wheel Tax.
Q. When will construction begin? A. Construction will begin in October 2011.
Q. How will this project affect my access to my home or business? A. During construction, it will be inevitable that construction crews will need to work in front of driveways and access roads that lead to businesses, and the City must maintain alternate access to them during construction.
Unfortunately, this temporary access cannot always be as direct as it was before construction. In addition, access may be provided on a newly graded, interim access road or may change several times throughout a project.
Your input will help the designers develop a recommended construction-phasing plan. This initial plan may change slightly once a contractor is selected. This construction-phasing plan will provide more specific information about the duration of access changes and detours.
Once a contractor is selected, the project team will work to keep you informed of the necessary changes.
