About the Project

Project Background

The 14th Street corridor, north of Superior Street, is developing at a rapid rate. New residential developments, including single-family housing units and apartment complexes, have already been built, and more residential and commercial developments are planned.

The increase in development has resulted in undesirable delays and traffic stacking on all approaches of the 14th and Superior intersection. As part of the City’s Capital Improvement Plan, the City of Lincoln plans to improve this intersection and widen 14th Street from a two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided roadway north of Superior Street. 14th Street to the south of Superior Street will remain a three-lane section.

Other components of this project include reconstruction of the 14th Street Bridge over I-80 and utility improvements throughout this area, including a water main expansion (already completed).

The City of Lincoln has considered a multi-lane roundabout or expanding the intersection at 14th and Superior. The City of Lincoln held a public meeting on March 29, 2010; met with numerous stakeholders around the intersection throughout the design process; and held a focus group. This feedback was used to help the City of Lincoln decide on the best option for this intersection and make design modifications that stakeholders felt were important.

Schedule

Design for the 14th Street and Superior Street intersection was completed in 2011; construction will begin in October 2011.
