Preliminary Design Concept

Olsson Associates is under contract to the City of Lincoln to design improvements to the existing Old Cheney Road-14th Street-Warlick Boulevard intersection area. The proposed improvements will include a four-legged intersection at the location of the existing 14th Street-Old Cheney Road intersection. The proposed design also shows a new intersection realigning Old Cheney Road with Warlick Boulevard. This intersection will be approximately 600 feet southwest of the current Old Cheney-Warlick intersection. This project will simplify the existing complex intersection geometry and improve traffic operations and safety.

The proposed improvements include widening the intersection so that there will initially be dual left-turn lanes, two through lanes, and an exclusive right-turn lane on each intersection approach. The design will accommodate expansion in the future.

Key elements of the project include:

  • Survey and Mapping
  • Traffic Analysis
  • Conceptual Design
  • Public Involvement
  • Preliminary and Final Design
  • Preparation of Final Bid Documents

Disclaimer

This is the concept design that is the result of the April 13,2004 public meeting. As the design work progresses, there may be continuing changes to this initial concept design.

Challenges and Constraints

There is no perfect solution for the redesign of this intersection. The design team is facing various challenges and constraints, including the need for good neighborhood traffic patterns, the desire to maintain the attractive campuses of nearby businesses, and the pending decisions on broader transportation issues. Even so, there is a satisfactory, workable solution to improve the intersection.
