Welcome to the website for the project to create a new design for the Old Cheney Road-Warlick Blvd-14th Street intersection area. The City of
Lincoln Engineering Services team, and the Olsson Associates design team, would like for all interested members of our community to have
detailed information about this project and we would also like to give citizens an opportunity to submit their ideas, opinions, and advice.
Project Overview
Background
Old Cherry Road intersects with South 14th Street and Warlick Boulevard to form two complex, closely spaced, signalized intersections.
Both of these intersections have had a substantial number of crashes in recent years with a higher than average frequency of injury and
fatality accidents as compared to intersections with similar traffic volumes.
In addition, as development along 14th Street has

grown, traffic volumes have increased
substantially. During rush hours in particular,
vehicle movements are often slow and difficult.
City officials recognize the compelling need to improve this intersection. During the past few years, they have conducted studies to
evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various realignment alternatives.
Project Goals and Benefits
The two most important benefits from this project will be:
- Improved safety, and
- Improved traffic operations
Additional capacity, reduced speeds, a less complex intersection, and improved intersection spacing will result in improved traffic operations and
a safer intersection. The intersection is being designed to provide acceptable levels of service using traffic volumes expected 25 years in the
future.
The Big Picture: Fitting this Intersection into Transportation plans for Southwest Lincoln
The redesign of this intersection is an important part of a larger transportation picture for southwest Lincoln. The City of Lincoln and Nebraska
Department of Roads (NDOR) have been carefully planning and designing a comprehensive transportation system for this part of Lincoln.
This new intersection and the realigned Warlick Boulevard mesh well with the City and NDOR plans for an interchange at Warlick Boulevard and Highway
77. The proposed intersection improvements will tie in with the widening of South 14th Street, giving motorists a much safer and more efficient route
to and from Southwest High School, Walt Library, the YMCA, and the nearby neighborhoods and businesses. These changes will also permanently improve
access to the proposed Beltway System consisting of Highway 77 and the proposed South and East Beltway.
Long-term plans for Old Cheney Road west of 14th Street are not final at this time. There is currently discussion of both closure and overpass options
for Old Cheney Road at Highway 77. As a result, the intersection is being designed to accommodate either long-term decision.
